GENERAL INFORMATION FOR SCIENCE

1. MATERIALS

2. CURRICULUM

This year students will be learning through the study of an integrated curriculum. We will be investigating concepts in life science, physical science, and earth science.

3. GRADING:

HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK- 20%

LABORATORY REPORTS /NOTEBOOK- 30%

TESTS/QUIZZES- 50%

4. HOMEWORK/CLASSWORK (20%)

Assignments will be given at several points during each unit of study. Assignments that are given as homework will typically be given after investigating the topic and will be utilized as a form of reinforcement. I prefer homework to be used as a reinforcement tool. This allows students to practice with information that they are already comfortable with, thereby increasing exposure to concepts and building students' confidence.

Most grades in this category will be in the form of classwork. I prefer to do many different types of activities in class. This allows me to monitor students as they are working with new concepts, offer guidance, catch mistakes and misconceptions immediately.

Although Starpoint Learning Academy students will be receiving work solely by digital means, be assured that individual learning styles will be addressed throughout their coursework from home. :)

5 LABORATORY REPORTS AND NOTEBOOK (30%)

Laboratory activities will be utilized to reinforce central topics within each unit throughout the year. There will be one large culminating laboratory exercise at the end of each unit. In addition, there will be several mini-labs and science activities throughout each chapter.

The notebook is the key to success on unit tests. Notes will be available digitally for ALL students. I will formally check notebooks/digital notebooks for all students by way of a notebook quiz one time per quarter6. TESTS AND QUIZZES (50%)

6. TESTS /QUIZZES

Different types of formal and informal assessments will be used to monitor student understanding at various points during each unit. However, there will be a Unit test administered to give formal closure to each unit. On these assessments students will have a variety of options available to demonstrate what they have learned.

Quizzes are announced and used as a quick reinforcement of material. If there is ever an unannounced quiz, that is a way for me to monitor my teaching of the material. If the students do well, I will count the grade. If they do not, I will reflect upon my teaching of the material and re-teach.
